The improvements highlighted will be achieved as a result of a structured training protocol which will subsequently develop the client’s performance in their specific sport. A number of examples are shown below. Clink on the sport highlighted for a more in depth look.
Football: Football is evolving all the time. It is becoming more of an athletic sport where skill must be complimented with excellent athletic ability. Clients training with Patrick looking to improve their overall game will experience a number of tangible benefits. They will improve their:
Speed – in just about any sport, a faster athlete makes for a better athlete.
Aerobic endurance: players will last longer in games, or will find they can perform to the same intensity with less effort.
Strength- Players who are stronger will find it easier to hold opponents of the ball, tackle harder, and may even improve their kicking strength.
Golf: Golf is a highly technical sport and as a result, the physical demands of the game are often overlooked. However, there is undoubtedly improvements that can be made to ones game if they undertake a structured exercise training plan.
Specifically, the back and shoulders need to be mobile and strong enough to perform the correct swing. The hips are also engaged in a golf swing. By training these muscles in a particular way, not only will client’s increase the distance that they drive the ball, but they are less likely to pick up injuries as a result of poor mobility or muscle weakness.
Moreover, simple innocuous changes will be observed from improving fitness levels. Carrying a 30kg golf bag will be less strenuous. And large uphill holes will be less tiring, and feel more like a walk than a hike!
Running: As discussed in the football section, Patrick can structure a programme that can directly improve your running performance. i.e. Your speed.
He is aware however that speed is relative to your goals. He can produce plans that improve your basic sprint speed but also improve your longer distance “speed” Anywhere from 30m sprints to the marathon can all be targeted and improved. The emphasis on running mechanics and conditioning exercises vary depending on your specific goal and this will be considered when your training programme is being drawn up. Furthermore, there is a number of different energy systems (link) that need to be addressed and different emphasis will be given to each depending on the client’s goal.
Rugby: Rugby requires a number of athletic attributes similar to football. However one arguable difference is the need for larger muscle mass. This is due in part to the fact that its obviously more difficult to get stopped if you have greater muscle mass and /or weight. However, there is no point in being large for the sake of it. If that was the case then body builders would all be great at rugby. Rugby requires excellent muscular conditioning as well as aerobic endurance and raw speed. Moreover, good balance is a necessity. It is therefore a very athletic event. There is a lot of multi- directional movement which can be improved through correct training. Often rugby players need to increase their muscle mass. Clients who have such a goal will be given an excellent programme for developing muscular hypertrophy whilst at the same time developing their explosiveness.
An intangible benefit that will be experienced will be a reduced likelihood of injury. The client will be trained and conditioned better, which will reduce the chances of picking up muscle tears. This will be partly as a result of developing the core strength (link) of the client which enhances the overall function and efficiency of the body. Furthermore, their body will become more robust and will be able to withstand heavy challenges or awkward falls.
The importance of regular exercise
Glasgow is a city infamous for the poor health statistics of those who inhabit it.
Coronary heart disease is more prevalent in Glasgow than anywhere else in Europe.
It is also home to some of the smallest life expectancy areas in the world. This is not a coincidence. Chronic problems stemming from poor diets and little or no physical activity lead to a plethora of physical and social problems.
Osteoporosis, Diabetes , Posture etc …
For this reason Patrick aims to highlight the importance of addressing these problems and ensure that each and every individual who requests his services are educated and instructed on how to improve the quality of their life. Gym sessions are not just for athletes. They benefit everyone. Patrick will structure a training plan that is specific and relevant to your needs and abilities.
If you always put a limit on everything you do, physical or anything else, it will spread into your work and into your life. There are no limits. There are only plateaus, and you must not stay there, you must go beyond them. – Bruce Lee
